About the Dimensions

The Usability Harmonics framework adapts the Cognitive Dimensions of Notations (Green & Petre, 1996; Blackwell & Green, 2003) for evaluating complex professional software. The original framework was developed over a decade of research into how notational systems and information artifacts affect cognitive work, and provides a vocabulary for discussing design trade-offs rather than a prescriptive checklist.

A Note on Trade-offs​

No dimension is inherently good or bad — each becomes evaluative only when applied to a specific user activity. Improving one dimension almost always affects others. For example, increasing Visibility may increase Diffuseness (more visible information takes up more space). Reducing Premature Commitment may increase Conceptual Burden (more choices to manage). These trade-offs are inevitable and intentional — the framework helps you make them consciously rather than accidentally.

The Core Six and Beyond​

The first six dimensions (Conceptual Burden, Invisible Links, Premature Commitment, Real-Time Review, Rigidity, and Visibility) are highlighted as "core" because they tend to surface the most critical issues in complex professional software. The remaining eight dimensions (Error-Proneness, Provisionality, Secondary Notation, Role Expressiveness, Closeness of Mapping, Consistency, Diffuseness, and Hard Mental Operations) are equally important for a thorough evaluation — they simply tend to address more specific aspects of the design rather than broad systemic patterns.
